GeoEnergia Conference: 5th generation decentralized urban cooling and heating networks with geothermal energy and other renewable sources

The Geothermal Working Group (GTG) of the Efficient Energy Cluster of Catalonia (CEEC), the Cartographic and Geològic Institute of Catalunya (ICGC) and the Catalan Energy Institute (ICAEN) are organizing a new edition of the Technical Conferences "GeoEnergy in Catalonia" with the aim of promoting and giving know the potential of geothermal energy as high efficiency energy in the new framework of the Energy Transition. The GeoEnergy Conference jointly organized by the GTG-CEEC, ICGC and ICAEN will be held on Tuesday March 28 at the Pompeu Fabra Auditorium of the COEIC (College of Industrial Engineers of Catalonia strong>) and will have a face-to-face format.

This year, the Conference specializes in publicizing the concept of modern or 5th-grade Cooling and Heating District Networks generation (5GDHC networks) supported with geothermal heat pumps together with other renewable sources (thermal and/or electric), and showing the potential of its deployment in Catalonia to tackle the decarbonization of towns and cities and thus accomplish with the 20230-2050 objectives. 5th generation networks are the most energy efficient type of networks currently in existence and have been deployed in Europe (Germany, Denmark, Great Britain, Switzerland, etc.) and the USA for years. A paradigm shift is necessary in the thermal energy supply model in Catalonia, from the current model based on individual installations based on the burning of fossil fuels (primarily natural gas and also diesel), to a mixed model with a notable presence of collective and shared facilities in the form of modern, efficient and intelligent district heating and cooling networks with decentralized production.
